Fireplace Mantel

We wanted beautiful mantels in our home, but our trim carpenter wanted an arm and a leg to custom build each mantel, and we needed three. We had the framing carpenter install 2X4s above the fireboxes to support the mantel installation, but ran into the problem: NO MANTELS TO INSTALL.
So, once again, we had to be resourceful. I looked on the Net, too expensive! I went to the framing lumber supply yard, too expensive! I went to the wood trim place, too expensive! No luck!
We didn’t have a choice! We HAD to have some kind of mantel up there! And then one day, I was picking up decorative light bulbs for the lights on our stone columns in the front, and ran into a section of the store that had prepackaged mantels. I was thrilled. I picked up three (about $118 apiece) and proceeded to the paint aisle to pick up stain and paint. These solid oak mantels are very decorative and average 5 feet long. One of them is longer… the one in the living room over the big 47-inch see through fireplace. We are REALLY pleased with the way they look, and installed them ourselves.
Since I love Christmas, and collect lighted ceramic villages, my husband had the electrician install an electrical plug on the top of each mantel. At Christmas time, I put in a multi-plug and plug in lighted garlands, which adorn the mantel. As it turns out, I have used these plugs year ‘round, for clocks and lighted crystals, and don’t know how I got by without them!
Of course, there is a wide range of mantel choices, but one thing is for sure: Once you have decorated a mantel you don’t want to be without one! After all, what is a fireplace without a mantel?
