A question. Not a comment.

In some states there are numerous regulations around building your own home not to mention city and county ordinances, numerous permits ect: I would like to know if the state of Florida requires an individual to use licensed contractors or is it possible to do your own building and have each step inspected as you go. If you have the time and the desire.

Response

Hello Charles,

A good place for you to start is you local county or city government. Call them and see what is required for your area. Every area is different. Where I live the only requirement was a septic system permit and a city permit.

Hope this helps,

George

From Steve:

Were do I look into finding a land clearing permit to start building on my lot?

Response:

Hello Steve,

When we built our home we checked with our local city and county government offices for all necessary permits to build our home. Check your local government information line. You should be able to find the number in the front of the phone book or do a search on Google for your town, city, county etc.. and contact there help line.

All the best,

From Samir:

Dear George,

I am planning an extension (a second floor) to my present house (in Toronto), what should I do in terms of rules that need to be met, or neighbors that need to approve..etc before I get to the budgeting stage.

Response:

Hello Samir,

You need to contact your local city or township government office and ask about permitting and codes that must be adhered to. They will be more than happy to help.

You may also need to contact your Homeowners association (if you have one) to see what requirements they have. Mine wanted a Plan and a drawing of the improvement to be made when I added a deck last year.

Make sure you contact them it would be a shame to add an addition and then find out it was out of code.

Hope this helps,

George
