What you Need to Consider

Building a Pond is pretty simple right? You just dig a hole in the ground and fill it with wter. Wrong! There are some things to consider before you start digging. I have listed some of them below.

Pond Building / Where do I put it?

This one seems simple also, but you need to consider a few things.

How are you going to fill it? If you are building a pond that is large you will need a good water source that is inexpensive, like a well or natural drainage from your property. We grade our property into the pond and also added a fill line from our well on a timer. During the summer months we add water daily to keep the level up during dry conditions. During the winter when it rains more frequently the level stays up without adding additional water.

Do you have electricity near the pond location? You may not be considering a pond fountain or lighting now, but chances are you may in the future. You want to consider a source of electricity to run you pond fountain and your lights.

How will a pond fit into your landscaping plans? Your pond will become the centerpiece of your landscaping. Take your time and draw out a plan for your landscaping considering the whole picture.

Building a Pond / How do I make it Hold Water?

This was the tough one for me. There are many different ways to seal your pond. You need to choose the one that is right for you. We built two ponds on our property, a small one in the front of our home, and a large pond in our backyard. We used a preformed plastic liner for the small pond, and sodium bentonite to seal the larger pond.
